1854 Trousseaux
When James Griffing resigned his employment as a map agent to take a ministerial
appointment with the Methodist Church in Indianapolis in 1854, plans for a
not-too-distant wedding began to emerge. By the summer of that year, James and
Augusta had pledged themselves to one another and a fall wedding was
contemplated. Augusta began to collect items she felt would be needed to set up
housekeeping in Indianapolis. For the majority of her trousseaux purchases,
Augusta turned to her Uncle Elizur Goodrich who was a partner in a Dry Goods
Business in Hartford, Connecticut. Augusta later expressed regret for having
purchased such "finery" when their wedding plans were surprisingly and
abruptly altered by James' appointment to Kansas Territory.
