Yesterday night I thought I should die. I could not sleep the whole night. Saw [Mick] Egan. Told him how Cole & Newton had fooled him in the Scroggins affair. Worked out an algebraic problem for him which Father Brady, an Irish priest, had given him which he could. Staid with Mick till half past one in the morning. August 6, 1865 Sunday. Went up to see Kumpe to see if he would go in with me in the Egan house for a vegetable store. He said he would if I can get the house so Mick & I called on Mrs. E__ch. Came down town with Louis ____ to Schriefer's & got some beer. Mick came in the afternoon. Showed him how to do the problems. Went down street. August 7, 1865 At store. At theater. Nothing new. Saw Syberg. August 8, 1865 At store. At theater. August 9, 1865 Kumpe & I started a vegetable stand in Mick Egan's house. August 10, 1865 _______ left. They paid me $13.00. Marsters & I talking about going to Hot Springs to peddle. August 11, 1865 Nigger who was to drive disappointed us. August 12, 1865 Helped Syberg measure the Anthony block and Henry's. Went to Lange's. Rousting about, Cole & I out till one. August 13, 1865 Sunday at home. August 14, 1865 Down street. August 15, 1865 Down street. August 16, 1865 Down street. August 17, 1865 Lange said yesterday that he wanted me to go to Washington [Arkansas] with him. August 18, 1865 At Lange's Saloon packing up. August 19, 1865 Left the Rock for Washington [Arkansas]. Started about 9 in morning. Left my badge with Newton's wife. Road pretty good but rough. Few people living along the road. Warm. August 20, 1865 Sunday. Got into Benton [Arkansas] early. Our head team broke down. Stayed till it was fixed. Road bad. August 21, 1865 Roads good. I walked about 20 miles through wood country. Few houses. Plain road. Go to Arkadelphia [Arkansas], crossed Ouachita [River] a little from Arkadelphia. Took a swim. Staid all night in Arkadelphia. August 22, 1865 Arkadelphia is a small place upon a knoll. Jako Townson there. I walked from Arkadelphia to Spoonsville about 12 miles before 10 o'clock. From Arkadelphia the road is very rough up hill and down hill. In afternoon, had a terrible rain storm. Roads bad. Stopped near Antoine [Arkansas]. August 23, 1865 Took an early start, crossed the little Mo. some roads good [but] sandy near Washington. Got to Washington [Arkansas] about before sundown. Camped near[by and] went into town -- small but tolerably pretty -- but very sandy. August 24, 1865 Got up early. Lange went up to hire a place. Got one. Drove up & unloaded. The other teams came in. Lange treated & got drunk. We slept in back room -- also Taylor -- a colored man who went along with us. August 25, 1865 In saloon. Called on Wiedemann's family. Sick. Business good. August 26, 1865 In saloon. Business pretty good. Gave letter to Dr. Ayres. Lange drank. We fell out. August 27, 1865 Sunday. My birthday. Business pretty good. Lange got drunk in morning. Everest, the suttler of the 12 Michigan, with others on a pic-nic excursion. Lange went part way & then came back. Took a walk about town with some young men. Lange very good, wanted to drink a bottle of champaign on account of my birthday. August 28, 1865 In saloon. Lange drunk. Mad at me. Saw Mrs. Wiedemann. August 29, 1865 In saloon. Lange drunk again. Took dinner & supper at a darkie restaurant. Dr. Meador here & Bill Davis. August 30, 1865 In saloon. Business good. A little rain. Metter, who was auditor, is in town. August 31, 1865 Lange & I both sick with the diarrhea. Cloudy & chilly.
