The Diaries of Ralph Leland Goodrich, 1859-1867

Back Home Up

December 11, 1866

Very cold. Wrote letters home & to [my sister] Augusta. Heard that __isa Wright was dead. Cole goes home on Wednesday. I will be sorry. Not much school and I do not know what I shall do. I will keep on & try to be better & do better. Oh Lord, help me.

Capt. Cole left this morning. Left me a bill of $30 to collect if I can. Says he will write to me. Slept with him last night at his room. Made him a present of a cigar case & a silver ring. He gave me a nice ink stand & ink & pens, & paper & books. I am sorry to see him leave. He said he would try to get me something to do in Cincinnati. I hope he will. Took a parting drink with him at Eldorado. In school.

[Editor's note: Goodrich made no entries in his diary from December 13 through December 24, 1866.]

Christmas. Dullest that I have had. In house all day. Finished [writing] Miss Maud & read it to Dr. Hartt. Liked it & had me read some of it to Hughes. He was delighted with it, especially my raid on Egan & Syberg. Griffith's daughter had a Christmas gift in the shape of a baby, without her taking the trouble to marry. (This Griffith baby is not so.)

[Editor's Note:  Goodrich made no further entries in his diary until January 3, 1866.]
