Griffing Grave Markers[click on each image for enlargement]
Two different images of the same marker placed at the gravesite of Rev. John Griffing & Lydia Redfield, his wife, in Tioga Cemetery west of Owego, New York. This couple were the parents of Rev. James Sayre Griffing. Rev. John Griffing & Lydia Redfield had twelve children: Henry Griffing, born 17 September 1809 in Berkshire, NY; died 2 September 1855, near Topeka, Kansas Territory. Henry is buried in the Topeka Cemetery in Topeka, Kansas although there is no marker placed at his grave site. Henry was married twice. His first wife was Mary Ann Dodge, born about 1813; died in Tioga, New York 22 April 1843. Mary Ann [Dodge] Griffing is buried in the Griffing plot of the Tioga Cemetery west of Owego, New York. Henry's second wife was Nancy C. Orcutt, born about 1821; date & place of death unknown.
Clarissa Griffing, born 10 December 1810, in Berkshire, NY; died 17 October 1880 in Table Rock, NE. Clarissa is buried next to her husband, Rev. Charles Woodbury Giddings, in the Table Rock Cemetery, Table Rock, NE. Rev. Charles Giddings was born 10 May 1810 in Norwich, CT and died 23 December 1879 in Table Rock, NE.
Lydia Griffing, born 8 February 1813 in Berkshire, NY; died 30 November 1846 in Tioga, NY. Lydia is buried in the Griffing family plot of the Tioga Cemetery west of Owego, NY. Lydia Griffing married John Canfield Kelly, born about 1812 and died 1880. John Kelly's grave site is presumably in Brooklyn, NY where he resided at the time of his death. After Lydia's death, John Kelly married Charlotte Hill, also of Tioga, NY.
John Griffing, born 26 March 1815, in Berkshire, NY; died 25 March 1855, in Union Springs, NY. John is buried in the Union Springs, NY Cemetery next to his wife, Sally Ann Beardsley and daughter, Mary I. Griffing. Sally Ann [Beardsley] Griffing was born 2 October 1818 in Cayuga, NY; died 19 August 1881 in Union Springs, NY.
Daniel Shoemaker Griffing, born 17 January 1817 in Tioga, NY; died 2 February 1867 in Baltimore, Maryland. Daniel was married to Eliza Shaffner who was born about 1822 and died about 1910 in Baltimore, Maryland. Daniel and his family's grave site is unknown but presumed to be Baltimore, Maryland. Beriah Redfield Griffing, born 27 March 1819 in Tioga, NY; died 25 September 1837 in Tioga, NY. Beriah is buried in the Griffing Family Plot of Tioga Cemetery west of Owego, New York.
Artemesia Griffing, born 15 March, 1821; died 19 March 1821. This infant daughter lived only four days. She is buried in the Griffing Family Plot of Tioga Cemetery west of Owego, New York. James Sayre Griffing, born 28 October, 1822 in Tioga, NY; died 3 April 1882 in Osawatomie, Kansas. James is buried in Sunset Cemetery in Manhattan, Kansas, next to his wife, Jemima Augusta Goodrich, and other family members. J. Augusta [Goodrich] Griffing was born 26 January 1829 in Tioga, NY; died 21 February 1906 in Manhattan, Kansas.
Samuel B. Griffing, born 1 August 1825 in Tioga, NY; died 24 December 1896 in Tioga, NY. Samuel in buried with his in-laws in the Taylor family plot of the Tioga Cemetery west of Owego, New York. Samuel married Lucinda Melvina Taylor, born 20 April 1829 in Tioga, NY; and died 10 February 1901 in Tioga, NY. Their names are inscribed on the large "Taylor" obelisk erected in the memory of David & Helena Taylor.
Osmyn Griffing, born 22 September 1828 in Tioga, NY; died 21 February 1874 in Falls City, Nebraska. Osmyn is buried in Steele Cemetery in Falls City, NE. Osmyn's wife, Sarah L. Reavis was born 12 September 1841 in Avon, Illinois; died 18 April 1915 in San Francisco, California. Sarah remarried Green Holton and left Nebraska following Osmyn's death. Permelia Griffing, born 8 February 1831 in Tioga, NY; died 1916 in Candor, NY. Permelia married Rev. Asa Brooks, who was born 1 October 1819 in Batavia, NY; died 20 May 1897 in Candor, NY. Both are buried with other family members in Maple Cemetery in Candor, NY. Markers of Permelia [Griffing] Brooks and Rev. Asa Brooks Mary M. Griffing, born 3 August 1834 in Tioga, NY; died 20 February 1905 in Waverly, NY. Mary married Grove Norton Pike, who was born 20 May 1834 in Massachusetts; and died 30 July 1888 in Waverly, NY. Mary and Grove are both buried in the Tioga Cemetery west of Owego, New York.
