In school. Saw [Capt.] Syberg. He is going to send [his son] Fred to me.

October 2, 1862

Rainy. In school. Nothing new. Saw [Capt.] Syberg. He is going into the army. Fred [Syberg will be] coming [to my school beginning] Monday.

Wrote letter home to be carried to Memphis. Got a letter from [cousin] Jim Fiddis. Said he was going to Cuba & I need not write to him anymore.

Sunday. Got a pair of shoes. At church.

In school. Walter Reardon is coming to me. Mathews is not elected.

In school. Saw Mathews. He [says he] did not tell Naori that I was not teacher & knew nothing.

Cold. At Mathews’ room. At [Ernest] Weidemann’s room. Saw [Capt.] Syberg. Got me wood cut at Graves’ and Coldwell’s.

Sunday. Dr. Wheat sick. Went to Catholic Church. Reading & studying.
